Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the American Medical Association Center for Public Health Preparedness & Disaster Response and the National Disaster Life Support Foundation, I am honored to offer our free online Core Disaster Life Support® (CDLS®) training course to members of the Medical Reserve Corps.  I hope that all interested MRC members will take the opportunity to complete this course and then assist our organization by applying their unique expertise to provide suggestions for potential CDLS course improvements.

Core Disaster Life Support® (CDLS®) is a nationally recognized all-hazards course designed to increase emergency responder awareness of basic skills, competencies, knowledge, and resources that are critical for a coordinated and effective local emergency response effort.  The electronic version, eCDLS, will give first responders the flexibility to access this important training when and where it is convenient for them.  eCDLS is an awareness level course of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Training and Exercise Integration/Training Operations (TEI/TO).

This online course is targeted to address the issues of paramount importance across first responder disciplines:  firefighters, law enforcement, emergency management, emergency medical services, public health, healthcare, public safety communications, governmental administrative, hazardous materials, and public works. They are covered at a level that is accessible and understandable across all levels of public health, health care, and safety.  The course comprises nine modules, a pre-test, and a post-test.

The course is funded and approved through a grant from the DHS. eCDLS users who complete the free course by September 30, 2008 will receive a CDLS course manual, the AMA virtual library CD-ROM, Responding to Public Health Emergencies, and a CDLS wallet-card. You do not need these materials to complete the course.

The American Medical Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.  The American Medical Association designates this educational activity for a maximum of 4.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.  Non-physicians may request a certificate of participation indicating the AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM.

The meeting will be Medical Support Logistics and Protocol Safety Training for the Bike MS Pedal to the Point Ride 2008.

All medical volunteers for the event are highly encouraged to attend this meeting.  If you are a volunteer and  cannot attend please contact T.J. Powell and we will make other arrangements.. The meeting will include a review of the medical protocols and the basic logistics for the event. Please bring three (3) photocopies of all of your certification cards to this meeting or have your original certifications available for verification (if photocopies cannot legally be obtained).

Ham Radio volunteers need not attend this meeting.  Jeff Garvas will be in touch with you concerning the logistics of the event.

The meeting will be held at the SOLON MEDICAL CAMPUS of SAINT VINCENT CHARITY HOSPITAL in the basement meeting room. This facility is located at 33001 Solon Road, Solon, Ohio 44139.

The good news is, we pushed the bus over; it was a field training exercise for Ouray County EMS, which ran the exercise, the Ouray Mountain Rescue Team, our vehicle extrication team, the Ouray Fire Department, the county sheriff’s department, and a few others mixed in for good measure, including representatives of two adjacent counties. We even had mock victims to save; 15 people who were made up with fake injuries and inserted into the bus (yes, after it was sent over the side, and after it was stabilized to ensure no one got hurt for real).

I’m a volunteer for our EMS system, but I actually worked it via my “other” volunteer job: I’m the county communications guy, and it was my responsibility to ensure everyone had the ability to communicate. We used six different channels to do it. Once we had everything in place, I didn’t have all that much to do, so I ran around with my camcorder and shot a bunch of video — including footage of the bus going over.
