School Bus Plunge (On Purpose)

Obtained from Randy Cassingham’s Blog: School Bus Plunge (On Purpose)

I spent most of the day Sunday working at the scene of a school bus that plunged (buses alwaysplunge“!) over the side of a steep embankment on Ouray County’s famous “Million Dollar Highway” below Red Mountain Pass.

The good news is, we pushed the bus over; it was a field training exercise for Ouray County EMS, which ran the exercise, the Ouray Mountain Rescue Team, our vehicle extrication team, the Ouray Fire Department, the county sheriff’s department, and a few others mixed in for good measure, including representatives of two adjacent counties. We even had mock victims to save; 15 people who were made up with fake injuries and inserted into the bus (yes, after it was sent over the side, and after it was stabilized to ensure no one got hurt for real).

I’m a volunteer for our EMS system, but I actually worked it via my “other” volunteer job: I’m the county communications guy, and it was my responsibility to ensure everyone had the ability to communicate. We used six different channels to do it. Once we had everything in place, I didn’t have all that much to do, so I ran around with my camcorder and shot a bunch of video — including footage of the bus going over. It’s a fairly wild shot (there’s a slow-motion of it at the end), and the following video puts it all into perspective for you:

Fund-Raiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

Judy Zeitler, the Secretary of NEOMRC, will be participating in a 100 mile bike ride for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Please make a donation if you can!

Below is the text of the email she sent out announcing her efforts.

TNT stands for Team in Training. This is a fund-raiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

I choose today as my fund-raiser kickoff because May 22 is significant in two ways. Six months from today, November 22, 2008, I am committed to training for and participating in the El tour de Tucson

100 Mile Cycling Event as part of the Northeast Ohio team. We are committed to raising funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma SocietyToday is also the 27th anniversary of my friend TJ’s bone marrow transplant that helped cure him of Leukemia.

I am participating in celebration of TJ’s cure and in memory of my uncle and a childhood friend who did not get their cure.

I ask that you visit my website at:

http://pages.teamintraining.org/noh/tucson08/jzeitler

It talks about why I am doing this and will track my progress in training for this event and reaching my fund-raising goal.

You can donate with a credit card there, or you can donate via a check through me.

This will not be the my first fund-raiser, but I hope that this email will raise awareness regarding Team in Training and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Please forward this message to anyone who may be interested!

Thanks for reading this and thank you for considering making a donation.
